Noise pollution remains a significant and often overlooked threat in the capital city of Dhaka. Recent findings highlight that in various areas of the city, noise levels are up to 2.5 times higher than the acceptable standards. A recent study by the Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS) at Stamford University’s Department of Environmental Sciences reveals that noise pollution in Dhaka is not on the decline. Their research indicates that in 2017, noise levels exceeded prescribed standards for 10 hours a day, a figure that has increased to 12-13 hours per day by 2023-24. The study observed an average noise level of 90.29 decibels across 77 road intersections, with the highest levels recorded at Paltan Intersection, where daytime noise averages 105.3 decibels.

Additionally, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report titled Frontiers 2022: Noise, Blazes, and Mismatches ranks Dhaka as the highest in the world for noise pollution. Rajshahi follows at fourth place. A 2016 survey by the Department of Environment also highlighted that noise levels at 70 locations in Dhaka were two to three times above standard limits.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, the acceptable indoor noise level is 55 decibels, while outdoor commercial areas should not exceed 70 decibels. In Dhaka, these levels are substantially higher. Major contributors to this pollution include vehicular traffic, aircraft, trains, industries, and recreational activities. Excessive noise poses serious risks to both physical and mental health. Sound levels above 85 decibels are considered harmful, with potential impacts including hearing damage, disrupted sleep, and increased risks of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and anxiety. Children are particularly vulnerable, with persistent exposure potentially impairing their focus and reading abilities.

Although Bangladesh has regulations for noise pollution control and punitive measures for offenders, these are largely ineffective. Consequently, public awareness is critical for meaningful change. To address this issue, the “Dhaka International 10K” event aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of noise pollution and promote personal actions to mitigate it. The event’s theme is: Run for Raising the Voice, Not the Noise. Let us all act together to reduce noise pollution and make our cities more livable for future generations.
